The Nation: Capitalism vs. The Climate - Here are the steps that are going to be necessary if we are going to do anything at all about climate change. “So when the Heartlanders react to evidence of human-induced climate change as if capitalism itself were coming under threat, it’s not because they are paranoid. It’s because they are paying attention.” The choice we face is: 1) trash the current world-wide greed based ‘free-market’ system or 2) crash the planet. One of those two things IS going to happen, soon.

Do The Math (Atlanta Variety Playhouse):

At the Copenhagen Climate Conference of 2009 the world’s leaders could only agree on one thing: "we agree that deep cuts in global emissions are required... so as to hold the increase in global temperature below two degrees Celsius." We are at 1 degree right now and half of the Arctic is gone, the Greenland glaciers are diminishing at the fastest rate ever, we are experiencing unprecedented droughts, heat and storms. Who knows what 2 degrees is going to do. Scientists estimate that humans can pour roughly 565 more gigatons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere by midcentury and still have some reasonable hope of staying below two degrees. However the fossil fuel industry’s continued profits depend upon the fact that we will burn all known reserves, or 2,795 gigatons of carbon dioxide - 5 times as much! One can  only conclude that the business model of the fossil fuel industry includes the total destruction of life on earth.

Bill McKibben and Naomi Klein

May, 2012 was “the 327th consecutive month in which the temperature of the entire globe exceeded the 20th-century average, the odds of which occurring by simple chance were 3.7 x 10-99, a number considerably larger than the number of stars in the universe.”

International Renewable Energy Agency: Renewable Power Generation Costs in 2018 -  Renewable power generation costs are now lower than any fossil fuel option, without financial assistance. And those costs continue to drop. The technical issues have been solved. Yet we continue to subsidize oil, gas and coal to the tune of at least $4.7 trillion annually. What are we waiting for?

Elizabeth Warren Proposes “Hardening” the US Military Against Climate Change - The US military is the world’s worst polluter, but instead of reducing its size and ending its reckless war mongering, Warren wants to throw more money at the MIC. The replies are most interesting.

DW: The Plastic Crisis Isn’t Just Ugly, It’s Fueling Global Warming - Most people think there is no relationship between plastic pollution and climate change. They are wrong. From the article: “Each stage in the "plastic life-cycle" produces greenhouse gas emissions, the researchers found. This includes: the extraction and transportation of fossil fuels used to formulate plastic, its refinement and manufacture, the management of plastic waste and its disposal.

In 2019 alone, researchers estimate that the production and incineration of plastic will contribute more than 850 million tons of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.”

UK Guardian: Why You’ll Never Meet a White Supremacist Who Cares About Climate Change - By far, one of the most insightful articles I have ever read.

New Yorker: The Good News About a Green New Deal - Several energy experts make the case that the only things preventing zero carbon emissions in the US are political inertia and the influence of the fossil-fuel industry. They estimate that the cost to convert the US to clean energy would be 2.5 to 3.0% of G.D.P., or about half of what we spend on defense. Most of it would come from private investors if incentivized correctly. “Right now, we have about ninety per cent or ninety-five per cent of the technology we need...”

New York Magazine: ‘The Planet Could Become Ungovernable’: Climate Scientist James Hansen - Dr. Hansen: “...a carbon price going up ten dollars a ton each year reduces emissions 30 percent in ten years.

If you made the price of fossil fuels honest by including a gradually rising carbon fee, then it actually spurs the economy and increases the GNP as you shift toward clean energies and energy efficiency. It creates potentially millions of jobs...”

The Carbon Fee Study , and Here, shows that this plan would lead to a 50% reduction in carbon emissions below 1990 levels, the addition of 2.8 million jobs, the avoidance of 230,000 premature deaths due to reduction in air pollutants. These results are consistent with studies done by the Congressional Budget Office.

Dr. Hansen: “The way to spur the economy — to modernize the economy and modernize the energy infrastructure — would be to give the money back to the public. Because a carbon fee is a progressive tax, in the sense that rich people have bigger carbon footprints. So if you do give 100 percent of the money to the public, 70 percent of the public comes out ahead.”

“If you made the price of fossil fuels honest by including a gradually rising carbon fee, then it actually spurs the economy and increases the GNP as you shift toward clean energies and energy efficiency. It creates potentially millions of jobs. But you can’t get either political party to propose that.

Now there’s this group of conservative elders — James Baker III, George P. Schultz, and some economists, Ted Halstead is the one who’s trying to organize them — trying to draw attention to the fact that it actually makes sense from a conservative perspective to make the price of fossil fuels honest, gradually.”

In These Times: Bill McKibben: The Unimaginable Is Now Possible: 100% Renewable Energy. We Can’t Settle For Less - The price of renewables has now dropped - and continues to drop - so low that a 100% switchover makes economic sense. The intermittency problem has been solved. There’s nothing stopping us but politicians. Germany, China, the UK, Scandinavian countries, Chile, Holland, etc. are far ahead of the US in the transition to 100% renewables. Currently more workers are employed in the US solar industry than the coal industry. The Labor Network for Sustainability is proposing a law similar to the 1944 GI bill to help displaced coal workers get re-educated and job placement. The transition will turn us all from energy consumers to energy owners.

KPBS: Sempra VP Surprises, Says 100 Percent Renewable Grid is Possible Now - This is the VP of one of the nation’s largest utility holding companies, addressing the annual La Jolla energy conference sponsored by the UC San Diego Institute of the Americas at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines: ““I am speaking with confidence now. We have a solution now to adjust the intermittency of solar and wind energy that is no longer a technology challenge. Now it is an economic decision," said Patrick Lee, Sempra Energy vice president for major project controls. “So installing a base load power plant is no longer your only option. You can now look at solar, wind and storage as alternatives, and still be able to manage the reliability of the grid. So that is the takeaway I would like you to have.”

Lee said that as a trained engineer, even three years ago he would not have believed this was possible.

It is hard to overstate the importance of this statement by a highly qualified industry expert.

We already have the technology to run the entire planet on renewable energy sources, and Here, Here, and Here. The people want it. Renewables provide more new jobs than fossil fuel projects. The only thing stopping us is the politicians, funded by the mega-corporations who are happy to destroy our planet if it makes them even filthy richer.

The Nation: Bill McKibben: Global Warming’s Terrifying New Chemistry - Turns out methane (CH4), mostly from fracking sites, is overtaking CO2 as the main driver of global warming. For living creatures on the face of the earth, that’s pretty scary.

NYTimes: Bill McKibben: Falling Short on Climate in Paris

NYTimes: COP 21: Nations Approve Landmark Climate Accord in Paris - Good: 195 nations have agreed to ‘do their best’ to limit the warming of the planet to 2 degrees Celsius, but that 1.5 would be even better. They also agreed that they will do their best to achieve ‘climate neutrality’ (what does that even mean?) and will try to phase out fossil fuels completely by 2050. It is a deal that sends the signal that it’s time to keep fossil fuels in the ground and that investors need to cut their ties with oil, coal and gas by divesting.

Bad: Nothing happens for 5 more years, until 2020! There are no provisions for any sort of sanctions/punishments/fines for nations that fail to live up to their pledge. The nations that have done the most to create this problem, such as the USA, will not contribute to any efforts to help developing nations go fossil free, or for nations that will disappear as a result of now guaranteed sea level rise. A 2 degree temperature rise guarantees an 8 meter rise (almost 30 feet) in sea level. New York, New Orleans, Charleston, most of Florida, and every other coastal city in the world - Gone! Worldwide, 100’s of millions of people will have to move. That makes the current Syrian refugee crisis small potatoes. Fires, floods, droughts, extinctions - all now guaranteed. We always like to say how much we care for our children and our grandchildren but as a result of this feeble agreement, they will spend the majority of their lives fleeing/recovering from vicious storms, extreme drought, starvation and disease.

A recent study based on the premise of a 2 degree rise concluded: We conclude that continued high emissions will make multi-meter sea level rise practically unavoidable and likely to occur this century. Social disruption and economic consequences of such a large sea level rise could be devastating. It is not difficult to imagine that conflicts arising from forced migrations and economic collapse might make the planet ungovernable, threatening the fabric of civilization.”

But this NYTimes article and the rest of the MSM - controlled by only 6 major corporations, all of whom share board members and Here with the fossil fuel and war corporations - are falling all over themselves cheering this absolutely fantastic new agreement.

National Geographic: Germany Has A Model For How We’ll Get Power In the Future - After Fukushima, 3/11/11, Germany decided to switch off its nuclear plants. It now generates 27% - and rising rapidly - of its electricity with renewables. On some days, that number is over 100% - also true in Denmark. Their energy prices keep falling. Other countries: Sweden is moving towards zero waste. Also see entry of 5/6/13.

UK Guardian: Bill McKibben: Exxon’s Climate Lie: ‘No Corporation Has Ever Done Anything This Big or Bad’ - A great summarization of the issue. See also Union of Concerned ScientistsLA Times, Frontline and Inside Climate News. Ever since 1968 (almost 40 years ago), Exxon scientists knew and reported to Exxon executives that climate change was happening, that humans were the cause and what the ultimate effects would be. If Exxon had publicized that information then, we would be having no ‘debate’ today and we could have taken actions which would have prevented the poles from melting, the ocean from acidifying, and could have slowed the sea rise in time to prevent the loss of the world’s most vulnerable regions and cultures. Instead they chose profits for themselves - and the politicians (R & D) went right along with it. Pure Evil.

Greenpeace: Obama’s Clean Power Plan is an Exaggeration - This won’t be a 32% decrease but rather a 20% decrease based on 2013 numbers and we could easily achieve a 65% decrease in emissions by 2030.

Democracy-NOW: Naomi Klein: Obama Sounding Like a Climate Leader, But When Will He Act Like One? - Synopsis: Foremost: This is a huge victory for grassroots activism. No way Obama would have unveiled this plan without the people making him.

But...the plan calls for cuts on carbon plants only - not cuts in drilling on public property, or offshore drilling, or drilling in the Arctic, or fracking, and he’s still waffling on the Keystone XL pipeline. These cuts on coal plants don’t even start for 7 years and are not due to be completed for 15 years. One step forward and five steps backwards is still moving backwards.

Right now Shell, which is in the preliminary stages of drilling in the Arctic only because the global-warming-caused melting ice has made it feasible, is telling its shareholders that the oil that they expect to find there will only come fully online in 2030, which is when we should be totally winding down our dependence on fossil fuels. It’s insanity.

Scientists are telling us that we need to...and engineers are telling us that technically we could run the country 100% on renewables. The only thing missing is politicians who will make it happen.

If Obama had announced this in his first year in office instead of his next to last year in office, it would be a different story.  As usual Obama sounds like a great leader, and honest, straightforward, and committed individual, but his actions never match his rhetoric - and are sometimes just the opposite. That’s been his MO since he first became prominent, long before 2008.

Business Insider: Earth’s Most Famous Climate Scientist Issues Bombshell Sea Level Warning and Daily Beast and MoJo - New research indicates a rise in sea levels at 10 times the rate previously predicted. So all those people who could care less because they will probably be dead before anything major happens are wrong. New York City and all other coastal cities may have less than a couple of decades of habitability left. From the study: “We conclude that continued high emissions will make multi-meter sea level rise practically unavoidable and likely to occur this century. Social disruption and economic consequences of such large sea level rise could be devastating. It is not difficult to imagine that conflicts arising from forced migrations and economic collapse might make the planet ungovernable, threatening the fabric of civilization.”

High Country News: Mapping 7 Million Gallons of Crude Oil Spills

Dept. of Defense: 2014 Climate Change Adaptation Roadmap - “Among the future trends that will impact our national security is climate change. Rising global temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, climbing sea levels, and more extreme weather events will intensify the challenges of global instability, hunger, poverty, and conflict. They will likely lead to food and water shortages, pandemic disease, disputes over refugees and resources, and destruction by natural disasters in regions across the globe.

In our defense strategy, we refer to climate change as a “threat multiplier” because it has the potential to exacerbate many of the challenges we are dealing with today – from infectious disease to terrorism. We are already beginning to see some of these impacts.

A changing climate will have real impacts on our military and the way it executes its missions. The military could be called upon more often to support civil authorities...

The impacts of climate change may increase the frequency, scale, and complexity of future missions, including Defense Support to Civil Authorities (DSCA)...

The impacts of climate change may cause instability in other countries by impairing access to food and water, damaging infrastructure, spreading disease, uprooting and displacing large numbers of people, compelling mass migration...

These developments could undermine already fragile governments that are unable to respond effectively or challenge currently stable governments, as well as increasing competition and tension between countries vying for limited resources.

These gaps in governance can create an avenue for extremist ideologies and conditions that foster terrorism.”

ProPublica: California Halts Injection Fracking Waste Due to Contamination of Aquifers

You Tube: Polar Vortex Explained in 2 Minutes

J Turley: Study In Journal of Endocrinology Finds Fracking Causing Chemical Contamination of Water Linked to Birth Defects and Other Maladies

Texas Observer: Wasteland: Frio County Struggles With Fracking’s Leftovers - Fracking chemicals, hydrocarbons (benzene, ethyl-benzene, toluene), minerals, metals, and radioactive materials (uranium) all being poured down wells that will eventually seep into the drinking water. Frio County has 20 ‘disposal wells’ currently online, each accepting 10,000 to 25,000 barrels of waste every day for a total of 5.2 million gallons per day. 7 more wells are pending approval and more permit applications are pending. County and farm-to-market roads are being destroyed by the 351,720 truck trips per year. Then there are the truck accidents and illegal dumping, as well as the increased odds of earthquakes associated with fracking and disposal wells. Shelby County, Texas is already experiencing this type of seismic activity. With the ‘boom’ in disposal activity comes increased drugs, crimes and car accidents. This ‘fracking water’ is being sucked out of the aquifers that people need to drink and the farmers need to irrigate their land.

Rolling Stone: Global Warming: UN Climate Change Report Proves Earth Is Suffering  - This is the IPCC’s 5th annual report, offering ever accumulating, irrefutable, slam-dunk evidence that the earth is warming and it is caused primarily by humans burning fossil fuels. Here’s the first IPCC report issued in 2007.

Counter Punch: Inside the Censored ePA Fracking Water Study - The actual study says “Methane and other gases released during drilling apparently caused significant damage to the water quality” of the underground aquifer. The EPA under instructions from the Obama re-election campaign, hid the actual study and issued a short ‘desk statement’ which said that the groundwater contamination was “naturally occurring.”

LA Times: EPA Shuts Down Another Fracking Study After Contamination is Found - This time in Dimock, PA. This is a continuing pattern. See entry of 7/3/13. Similar studies in Pavillion, WY and Weatherford, TX and Here were also recently shut down by EPA when the results showed fracking contaminants in aquifers. New EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy was confirmed on 7/18. This ball is in her court.

ProPublica: EPA’s Abandoned Wyoming Fracking Study One Retreat of Many - EPA started to get results that didn’t make the oil/gas industry lobbyists happy, so under pressure from Rethug politicians, the Obama Admin. directed it to turn the study over to a group controlled by the oil/gas industry. This article contains 4 other examples just in the last 15 months. The EPA finished studies in Nov. 2011 and Here showing undeniable links between fracking and groundwater contamination, but since then it has not been allowed to do its job. Hey you know a little benzene, methane, arsenic, copper, vanadium, 2-butoxyethanol phophate, phenols, acetone, toluene, naphthalene and good ole diesel fuel in the drinking water never hurt anybody. It’ll just make those kids tough for the real world out there. The EPA “has advised Pavillion residents not to bathe, cook with, or drink the water flowing from their taps.” What does the gas industry have to say? Just like CO2, methane is a naturally occurring compound, so what’s to worry about? See entries below of 12/8 and 11/10/11.

New Yorker: Koch Pledge Tied to Congressional Climate Inaction - Koch Bros. industries have given $41 Million to non-profit ‘think tanks,’ $30.5 Million to 221 colleges and universities to fund studies that support no action on climate change. Most of the money was funneled through the teabagger astroturf group Americans For Prosperity. 411 current office holders have signed the ‘No Climate Tax’ pledge to oppose any action on climate change. The entire Republican leadership in the House, a third of House members and one fourth of the Senate have all signed the pledge.

CBS News: Hanford Nuclear Waste Clean-Up Delayed and Billions Over Budget - Bechtel Corporation: Build first, then design. Thousands of gallons of nuclear waste water leaking into the ground every year. We don’t know exactly what’s in that water, but we’ve got a plan to clean it up anyway?? This is costing the US taxpayer a minimum of $2 Billion per year. And now we have a pro-fracking, drag queen as Sec. of Energy, so I’m sure everything is going to be just fine. Accidents Will Happen. See entry of 6/10 and 5/6.

The Nation: Pandora’s Terrifying Promise: Can Nuclear Power Save the Planet? - No, not even if  one believes that all 7 billion + people on the planet deserve to continue and share in a wasteful, energy rich future based upon ever increasing fuel consumption. A very one-sided film that focuses only on the facts that serve the assertions of the 5 protagonists. “Opponents are portrayed as naive, ill-informed, irrational freaks.” “The question is not how can we further promote a lifestyle of living beyond our means, but how can we live more lightly on the planet.” Living lightly on the planet does not imply a spare, uncomfortable life style. See entry of 5/16 below. Other countries are making the switch to renewable fuels without resorting to nuclear power very nicely. What to do with the spent fuel is never mentioned in the film. Just remember Chernobyl (at least 68,000 deaths over 50 years), Fukushima (still under assessment), Monju, Indian Point, Brown’s Ferry and Three-Mile Island. Accidents will happen and Here. “Those wacky tree-huggers at McKinsey & Company, one of the world’s foremost management consulting firms, have demonstrated that improved efficiency could cut US energy consumption by 23 percent by 2020, while saving $680 billion and abating 1.1 gigatons of greenhouse gas emissions annually.”

IOP Science: 97% of Scientists Agree: Global Warming is Real and Caused by People Burning Fossil Fuels and MoJo - This is the definitive study.

NYTimes: A Carbon Trading System Worth Saving - This is all about the flaws in the European Union’s cap-and-trade system. But then at the end: “Emissions have fallen by 14 percent among sectors covered by the program in countries that have participated since 2005. Analysts attribute much of that reduction to the cap on emissions, not the recession.” But Hello! How about taking a stand on a US cap-and-trade? And don’t forget that Germany now has a solar capacity of 33 GW, and will produce 100% of its needs from solar by 2050. Total yield in the EU from solar: 17.3 TWh (terrawatts = 1,000 GW). The following countries get most of their power from renewables: Iceland (100%), Norway (98%), Brazil (86%), Austria (62%), New Zealand (65%), and Sweden (54%). And: In 2011, renewable power — solar, wind and hydro — produced 13 percent of America’s electricity. The mantra that the US has no choice but to push ahead with more drilling for oil and natural gas because no matter what we’ll be dependent on fossil fuels for the foreseeable future, is a total myth.

MoJo: A Climate Change Fix Conservative Can Love - “The answer is steeped in conservative economics: Companies that pollute should be taxed so that a product's cost to society is reflected in the price of that product. Milton Friedman and Richard Posner agree on this point!”

The idea, proposed by Hansen, is simple: a fee on carbon emissions collected from fossil-fuel companies, with 100 percent of the money rebated to legal residents on a per capita basis. It is simple, would move us away from carbon-based fuels, would cost most consumers nothing, and would stimulate innovation in the clean-energy sector. Right now, in contrast, we are subsidizing fossil fuels to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars a year—while the greatest minds in science agree that we are destroying our planet.”

Democracy-NOW!: Climate Skeptic, Koch-Funded Scientist Admits Global Warming Real & Human Caused

NYTimes: The Conversion of a Climate-Change Skeptic and Think Progress - Possibly the most important moment in the climate debate to date. Koch funded researcher and climate-change skeptic concludes that not only is climate change for real, but that it is caused by human emission from fossil fuel burning. See entry of 11/8/11 below where this same scientist concluded in a previous study that climate change was real (again with Koch money), but ‘could make no conclusion as to its cause.’ This should put to an end any further discussion of what’s happening and why. The only thing left is what do we do about it? Look for the Heartland Institute and all the rest of the fossil fuel industry-financed ‘think tanks’ to begin trying to destroy Muller’s reputation and career.

Rolling Stone: Bill McKibben: Global Warming’s Terrifying New Math - We are knowingly about to create a ‘new planet straight out of science fiction.’ Response? ... Anybody? “You know those new cigarette packs, where governments make them put a picture of someone with a hole in their throats? Gas pumps should have something like that.” Action is not impossible. Right now Germany gets about half of its power from solar panels within its borders. Campaign ’08 Obama. Campaign ’12 Obama: “You have my word that we will keep drilling everywhere we can...That’s a commitment that I make.” Naomi Klien: “...with the fossil fuel industry, wrecking the planet is their business model.” If the fossil fuel industry was forced to pay for the damage its (CO2) waste emissions do to the planet, like every other industry, global warming would stop in its tracks. If a college’s endowment portfolio has fossil-fuel stocks then the students’ educations are being subsidized by investments that guarantee they won’t have much of a planet on which to make use of their degrees. Same with retirees whose annuities/pension funds are invested in fossil-fuel stocks. See entry by this same author of 2/7/12.

NYTimes: James Hansen: Game Over for the Climate

TomDispatch: Bill McKibben: Why the Energy-Industrial Elite Has It In For The Planet - Essentially because to admit that the rise in CO2 in the atmosphere is due to human use of fossil fuels, would require them to write off $20 Trillion in reserves, which would completely devastate the most profitable industry in the history of mankind. Example: ExxonMobil makes $40 to $45 Billion profit every year. And Here’s why politicians won’t touch global warming seriously. A very interesting read. McKibben is the founder of and is thought by many to be the leading environmentalist in America. His first book was ‘The End of Nature.’ His latest is ‘Earth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet.’

The Nation: Naomi Klein: Capitalism vs. the Climate - Right wing deniers are right about one thing: a serious approach to reversing the increase of CO2 in the air is going to require the death of capitalism. Here are the steps that are going to be required.

ProPublica: EPA Finds Hard Evidence of Fracking Carcinogen Contamination in Wyoming Aquifer - Finally! This all but puts the final nail in the coffin of the gas industry argument for a lack of scientific data. The people in this area have been suffering heart-breaking illnesses for years and have said all along that it never happened until the fracking started. 2-Butoxyethanol, benzene, phenols, acetone, toluene, naphthalene, diesel fuel, methane gas that matches the deep layers of natural gas being drilled for and not the shallow methane that allegedly ‘naturally’ occurs in the water. None of the compounds found were consistent with agricultural activities. See also entries of 12/18/13 and 9/16, 7/14, 7/10, 6/24, and 5/9/11. And rent the movie ‘Gasland.’

The Nation: Capitalism vs. The Climate - Here are the steps that are going to be necessary if we are going to do anything at all about climate change. “So when the Heartlanders react to evidence of human-induced climate change as if capitalism itself were coming under threat, it’s not because they are paranoid. It’s because they are paying attention.”

HuffPo: Keystone XL Hires Ex-Staffers For Obama, Clinton and John Kerry to Lobby State Dept.

Daily Beast: Obama’s Keystone XL Pipeline Mess - First, Clinton’s State Department hires Cardno Entrix, a private firm to do the environmental impact review. Cardno Entrix’s other client is TransCanada, the company that wants to build the pipeline. TransCanada recommended Cardno Entrix and managed the bidding process that ended up picking Cardno Entrix. So the pipeline recommended the company they wanted to review them, and managed the bidding process that chose them. The Republicans, who have done such a great job of drawing attention to the Solyndra scandal have been silent on this process. Why? Because another big backer of the pipeline is Koch Bros. And finally, Hillary Clinton’s former deputy campaign manager took the job as TransCanda’s chief lobbyist and several of Clinton’s large campaign bundlers are working as lobbyists for the pipeline. This may be Obama’s biggest scandal yet.
